  • Repelin will work and will not harm your fiberglass, however it was invented primarily for use on Hypalon and PVC. VS721 Bottom Coat will work better since it was invented especially for fiberglass and aluminum. It has stronger bonding properties. It's important to get your hull back to pristine before you use it.

  • In a simple answer, Yes! However, a better product for your sailboat is Aurora VS721 Bottom Wax with VS721. It is from the same family of products but it is designed to cross-link to the fiberglass more so than the Repelin.VS721 Bottom Wax is too aggressive for Inflatable fabrics. Repelin was designed especially for protecting Inflatables from marine growth, without damaging the fabrics and adhesives or effecting the patchability. It can also be used on fiberglass, aluminum and hard painted surfaces.

  • The main ingredient in Repelin is VS721. It's a proprietary hydrophobic polymer that is more slippery than water. There are no toxins or biocides to kill marine life, instead this super slippery surface makes it difficult for marine growth to attach. Bacterial slime will attach to all surfaces, but keeping it wiped off, from time to time, will keep your boat bottom clean. It's inert so it doesn't sough off into the water, making it environment safe.

Other bonuses for using Repelin is that it will seal the pores in fiberglass bottoms on RIB's against osmosis blisters, the reduced friction on the hull will give your boat better performance and speed and reduce fuel consumption. It's perfectly clear so it doesn't change the appearance of your boat.

For guaranteed results, be sure to use Speed Clean and Poly Guard to properly prep the surfaces before applying Repelin.

  • We can not guarantee that Repelin will work with other manufacturer’s products as we do not test our products with theirs. All Aurora products are system matched and are guaranteed to work with each other. Most major inflatable boat manufacturers now recommend Aurora products. They are proven to provide superior protection without any damage to the material or construction of their boats.

  • One bottle of Speed Clean, Poly Guard and Repelin should be sufficient for your boat, unless it’s in bad shape, then you will need more.

Repelin has a minimum quantity of UV, sufficient to protect the coating but not the substrate. Poly Guard, which is applied to the tube and to soft bottoms does provide adequate UV protection. Repelin should be applied over Poly Guard, so it will give you the protection against UV on the tube. If your boat is a RIB, the Repelin is applied directly to the fiberglass or painted aluminum hull. It will seal the pores and protect against Osmosis but will not give you much protection against UV.

Repelin is an expensive product to produce and because most RIB owners either leave their boats in the water or keep them on davits, with minimum exposure of the fiberglass to direct UV, it was decided to minimize the UV protection in order to keep the price down.

Because of your question, we realize that other boaters may use their inflatables in a similar manner. We have had discussions with our technical department and they will be examining the feasibility and cost of increasing the UV protection.

  • Yes. If you apply Repelin directly to the Hypalon tube, it will bond to the tube and if ever you need to make a patch or glue on a fixture, it will be very difficult to remove the Repelin and your patch may not be satisfactory. Poly Guard can be completely removed so if you put it on first and then the Repelin, you can remove both if you need to. Repelin also provides extra UV protection to reduce oxidation and chalking which is common with Hypalon boats.

Repelin will not break down Hypalon but will bond aggressively which can impair patchability. Poly Guard acts as a base that can be completely stripped.

For guaranteed results I also recommend that you clean and remove all stains, oxidation and release chemicals used in manufacture from the Hypalon fabric with Speed Clean before applying the Poly Guard. The results will be worth the effort

  • Nothing lasts forever. Repelin needs to be re-applied every year, twice in the tropics.

Poly Guard protects the tubes from UV, oils, dirt, grime, etc. It is also required as a primer or base coat for the Repelin on the tubes. If you put the Repelin directly on the tubes, it will cross link to the fabric and will be difficult to remove if ever you need to do a repair or patch. By putting it over the Poly Guard on the tube, it can be completely stripped if necessary.

All surfaces need to be cleaned and stripped with Speed Clean prior to application of Poly Guard and Repelin, even brand new boats. This insures that the surface is free of all dirt, oils, release agents, oxidized material and other pollutants that could impair the application and bonding of Poly Guard. When you clean your boat prior to the next application, you will strip the Repelin and Poly Guard so that new material can be applied to your boat and not to the oxidized and spent protectors.

Layering new polishes or protectors over old is false economy. The new is protecting the old, not the boat. It will break down faster and delaminate from the boat, leaving it completely unprotected. Think of using expensive paint to paint over dirty, greasy, peeling wall paper on a wall. You're better off to strip the old paper and applying a primer before painting the wall. The wall will look better, be better protected and the paint job will last much longer.

  • Thanks for your confidence in Aurora Boat Care Products. We know that Coast Guard boats take much more abuse than civilian craft so it's good to hear that our products are up to the challenge. We never get tired of hearing how well our products work on our customers boats.

Poly Guard and Repelin can be stripped with Speed Clean if ever you need to make a repair to your boat. Use a Marine Power Mitt with the Speed Clean to reduce labor.

We also recommend that you strip the entire boat once a year to prevent build up and remove any deteriorated material. Then re-apply a fresh coat of Poly Guard and Repelin. This insures that the surface of your boat has maximum protection. Scheduled annual maintenance will keep your boat looking new and significantly reduce regular maintenance. It can double your boats effective life and a clean shiny boat shows your pride.

If your boat is a RIB, use Sure Step on the deck to protect it from UV, dirt, stains and water penetration plus add a degree of safety as it will reduce slipping, even when the decks are wet. This will also eliminate the need for constant scrubbing to keep your boat ship shape.
