Frequently Asked Questions

  • Algex & Alumabrite CBX can both be applied between 35"F - 2"C and 80"F - 27"C. The lower the temperature, the slower the cleaning and brightening will be and the longer you will have to wait. The higher the temperature the faster the action but when the temperature is at the higher range, you also have to be careful that the products do not evaporate before they have had a chance to work.

When working with Alumabrite CBX, it's important to do a test in an inconspicuous spot to determine the right concentration and amount of time to leave the product on. If it starts to dry before you rinse it off, you will get streaks. If left on too long, especially in elevated temperatures, it will turn the aluminum white.

  • Alumabrite CBX is an acid based cleaner that will etch glass. It normally does not bother most plastics but could cause streaking on some and it can corrode electronic components and wiring and may streak other metal. It will not harm fiberglass providing it's rinsed off. You need to mask off and protect these components with plastic sheeting or plastic bags and masking tape or a coating of grease.

Alumabrite CBX will bring back the shiny silver color of aluminum without polishing. We recommend that you do a test to determine the ideal concentration and waiting time before rinsing it off for best results. We also recommend washing it afterwards with a 1:4 solution of Boat Clean Plus and water to remove any residue and neutralize any Alumabrite CBX that may not have been completely rinsed away. After, if you protect it with Alumetron, it will stay bright and shiny and resist corrosion.

  • Alumabrite CBX will not harm newer polyurethane paints or gelcoat on fiberglass. It can cause some streaking on anti-fouling bottom paints and may attack some older paints, especially if the composition of the paint is unknown. Before using Alumabrite CBX, or any other strong cleaner for that matter, near any paint or gelcoat, I suggest that you test it on a small inconspicuous spot to see if there are any negative effects, before doing the entire boat.

  • Alumabrite CBX is an acid based cleaner so you have to be careful when you use it. It should not damage the decals, but to be sure, do a test first in an inconspicuous spot. Decals are made of different grades of vinyl or other materials, the decorative inks or paints are different, some are printed on the front others on the back, some are over-laminated, some not, so there is no one answer. Test first!

  • Yes. Alumabrite CBX will clean and brighten both raw as well as anodized aluminum and will also help to coat the areas that are abraded by halyard rub and slap.

After the aluminum is clean and bright, consider protecting it with Alumetron. Alumetron will also stand up to salt air and prevent pitting and corrosion.

  • Use Aurora Algex to remove algae, barnacles and zebra mussels. It won't damage aluminum casings or remove paint. You can also use Aurora Algex to clean marine growth from outboards & sterndrives.

To clean and brighten exposed metal surfaces use Aurora Alumabrite CBX. Use Full strength for heavy build up. Dilute 1:1 with warm water for light build up. Use a garden sprayer for easy application. I suggest inverting the boat so that you don't get overspray onto the inside of the boat and protect the painted bottom as the Alumabrite CBX may damage the paint.

If you want an even brighter finish, you can polish it to a chrome like finish with Aurora Boat Scrub, either by hand or with a buffer. This will also get the scuff marks out.

Afterwards, protect topsides with Premium Boat Shine and your boat bottom with VS721 Bottom Coat to maintain the shiny finish.
