Frequently Asked Questions

  • Coverage on VS721 is about 400 sq ft and you need 2 coats so one bottle will do about a 24 ft boat. The amount of Algae Strip is dependant on the amount and type and age of the growth plus the size of the boat. Barnacles will require much more product to remove than algae and heavy old growth will require more than fresh light growth or stains. One bottle should be enough to remove light growth from a 20 to 25 ft boat. Barnacles could take 3 to 4 bottles for the same size boat.

  • VS721 will give you about the same antifouling benefits as VC17 but it will resist the attachment of Zebra Mussels better. It’s rare to see any Zebra Mussels attached to a VS721 coated bottom. If you start to see slime towards the end of the season, it can easily be wiped off with a sponge or Marine Power Mitt. Scrubbing is not required. This can be done either by diving under the boat or taking the boat to a sandbar or close to shore, providing the keel is not too deep, and wiping off any slime. Because of the regular use of your boat the slime build up should be minimal, except at the transom.

VS721 will give you some other benefits as well. It seals the gelcoat to prevent osmosis blistering therefore eliminating the need for a barrier coat. You need to strip off the old paint and apply the VS721 directly to the bare hull. Preparation is to scrub the surface with Boat Scrub to deep clean the gelcoat and maximize the adhesion. If you want to apply a barrier coat, you can still apply VS721 to the barrier coat, but it’s not necessary and will just add weight. It does not contain neurotoxins like antifouling paint and is environment friendly. VS721 will last the full season in the Great Lakes area.

It will also help with your racing. VS721 has been proven to consistently put racers in the winners circle (World and National Championships and more). Sailors report ¼ to ½ knot better top speed and it will give you an advantage in light airs, allowing you to keep sailing when others are becalmed. It will also allow you to point higher, tack faster and gain more lift. It’s perfectly clear so you’ll be able to show off your beautiful white, factory bottom when you’re healing.

  • When it comes time to reapply VS721 Bottom Coat, clean the bottom with Boat Scrub and apply two coats again. Apply it to everything below the waterline, including the drives but not on the propeller.

  • No sanding is required. Prior to applying VS721 the first time, give the bottom a good cleaning with Boat Scrub. Two coats will last the entire season. It will give you a very slippery surface that should improve the performance of your boat. Depending on where you moor your boat and how often you use it, it is a good idea to wipe any slime off the bottom from time. If you use the boat on a regular basis, slime will not accumulate.

  • No. VS721 Bottom Coat is synthetic and will not yellow. It will give you a super slick, hard, anti-static finish that is not greasy or oily.

  • You can not apply VS721 Bottom Coat over VC. Your boat bottom has to be stripped back to bare gelcoat or paint and the VS721 Bottom Coat applied directly to the clean bottom. Preparation for VS721 Bottom Coat is quite easy. Give the gelcoat a good scrubbing with Boat Scrub, rinse, let dry and apply the VS721 Bottom Coat with a sponge. When it dries to a haze, wipe off the haze. After 24 hours apply a 2nd coat. After 48 hours, you can launch your boat. VS721 Bottom Coat also seals the bottom to protect against Osmosis Blistering, so there is no need for a barrier coat.

In addition to reducing the attachment of marine fouling, you should see an improvement in performance; higher top speed, better light air performance, better tacking, ability to point higher. It has been proven on the race course by helping win the World Championship, National Championship etc.

  • VS721 will give you about the same anti-fouling properties as the racing bottom paints, like VC17. Depending on where you are and how frequently you use you boat will determine how VS721 performs. Regular use of your boat will keep all growth and slime off, except for the transom where you do not get water turbulence to wash the slime off.

In high growth areas, such as Florida or southern CA, boaters wipe the slime off the bottom with a sponge, either by hauling the boat or diving under it, about once per month. Keeping the slime off prevents higher life forms from attaching. In these areas it is necessary to clean the slime or growth off painted boats as well, the difference is that air operated scrubbing machines are necessary to remove the growth from the painted boats. In Northern areas it's mostly slime that attaches, both in fresh and salt water.

Even if you get some growth it is very easy to remove. A deck brush will remove algae and you can remove barnacles with your finger nail, if you get at them in time. The trick is to keep the slime at bay by wiping with a sponge from time to time if necessary. Other advantages of VS721 is that it will seal the bottom against osmosis blisters, give you better performance and speed and reduce fuel consumption.Unlike toxic bottom paints, VS721 is inert and environment friendly. It was recently approved for use in Sweden, where toxic bottom paints have already been banned. Toxic paints have now been banned in 5 European countries and it is only a matter of time before it happens here.

There is no perfect anti-fouling solution for boats, except to keep them out of the water. We have seen a recent 450% increase in sales so it's obvious that a lot of boat owners are happy with our VS721 and continue to use it. They must also be telling their friends, judging from the steep increased demand.

It's worth a try. If it does not work to your satisfaction, you can always go to sanding your boat and painting with epoxy sealant and bottom paint next year. If you go to paint, it is very hard to reverse because stripping and refinishing your boat is expensive and time consuming.

  • Coverage is about 400 sq. ft per bottle, less if your boat is new, more if your boat is older. VS721 will soak into the pores of the gelcoat to seal it and older boats absorb more material. You will probably need about 1 1/2 bottles for your boat.

For best results, be sure to wash the bottom with Boat Clean Plus and prep the surface with Boat Scrub before applying the VS721.

  • VS721 Bottom Wax has been on the market since 1995 and is a proven performer. It will give you the same anti fouling protection as VC17 bottom paint, without the ugly painted look that you want to avoid. In addition it will seal the bottom against water penetration to protect against Osmosis without painting on a barrier coat and give you better performance. It's perfectly clear so your bottom will look original, just a little shinier.

VS721 Bottom Wax prevents Barnacles and algae from attaching, but since it’s environment friendly it does not have toxic biocides so will not prevent slime. The movement of water over your hull from regular use of your boat will keep the slime off. If you do leave your boat stationary for a prolonged period of time, you will get slime attaching to the hull, but this can easily be wiped off with a sponge or brush. At the end of the year you will be able to just wash the bottom with some Boat Clean Plus and a sponge or pressure wash it clean. In high growth areas, even boats with bottom paint will get slime and need to be scrubbed from time to time.

We sell a lot of it in Florida. Typically Floridians will lift the boat once a month, wipe the slime off with a sponge and re-splash, or if the boat is bigger will send a diver down to wipe the bottom with a sponge. There is no need to use a scrubber like with anti-fouling paints. They re-apply a coat of VS721 Bottom Wax every 6 to 9 months to get maximum performance. VS721 Bottom Wax lasts longer in colder northern waters.

If for any reason you don’t like the performance of the VS721 Bottom Wax, it’s reversible. it can be easily stripped off and you can then sand your bottom and paint it with a barrier coat and apply anti-fouling paint. It's much more difficult going from paint to VS721 Bottom Wax, but a lot of boat owners are doing it. They are just fed up with the scraping, sanding and painting. Some are environmentalists and don’t want to poison the water with biocides. Others use it to get higher top speed, better acceleration or reduced fuel consumption.

VS721 Bottom Wax works on sail as well as powerboats. For best performance, follow the instructions on the bottle. One bottle of VS721 Bottom Wax will protect up to 400 sq. ft. and you need 2 coats.

  • The benefits of using Aurora VS721 Bottom Coat instead of painting are many. Some of them are: Works in salt and fresh water. Use on power, sail, trailered boats. Protection against algae, barnacles and zebra mussels. Less cost. Easier application. No sanding or scraping. No toxins or poisons to deal with. Environment friendly. Inert and stable, up to 145 mph. No environmental concerns when applying or cleaning. Won't harm fish or other marine life. Reduces spread of non-indigenous species from one body of water to another. No present or future regulatory concerns to deal with. You can DIY (Do It Yourself) without a permit or regulatory training. No government restrictions. Clear coating allows you to see the condition of your hull at all times without stripping away the paint. Osmosis protection. Higher top speed. Better acceleration. Reduced fuel consumption. Quicker and easier hole shots. Better light air performance for sailboats. Reduced kiting and crashing on performance powerboats. Improved handling. Inert, will not rub or slough off into the water trailer or slings. Easier to launch and haul trailered boats. Safer when people are swimming near your boat. Improved appearance, brilliant shine, clear coating will not change the color of you hull, increased value when you sell or trade your boat. Easier clean up at the end of the season. Apply to all surfaces below the waterline without concerns about galvanic action. Safe to use on aluminum boats.

  • Some boat owners have had great results in your area, others were disappointed. It all depends on how you use your boat and your expectations. If you leave your boat in the water constantly and do not use it regularly, then VS721 is not for you. Under these conditions, you may have problems with highly toxic anti-fouling paint as well.

If you use your boat on a regular basis and have a way to wipe off the slime if it accumulates, it will work well for you. Once slime forms (food for higher life forms) then you will get algae and barnacles attaching. A clean boat bottom is an inhospitable home for these critters.

VS721 works by reducing the surface friction on the hull, making it difficult for marine growth to attach. There are no biocides to kill surrounding marine life. Some added benefits are lower fuel consumption, higher speed, better acceleration and prevention of osmosis blisters.

  • The dry time for VS721 is not critical, but if allowed to cure in air for a minimum of 48 hours we find that the longivity is greater. The weather conditions you describe will help but by splashing the boat early you may sacrifice some effective life and therefore have to reapply it a bit earlier than if it had properly cured. In some cases, where the season is short, this will not be a factor

  • Zebra Mussels have a hard time attaching to VS721 because it is so slick. It has been used in the Great Lakes for over 10 years with great results. If you start to get slime on the bottom of you boat because you do not use it enough for the water to knock it off, simply wipe off the slime with a sponge and that will give you the protection you want. You can do this by either hauling your boat or taking it out to a sand bar and jumping in the water with a sponge.

VS721 will also seal the porosity in the gelcoat to protect against Osmosis Blisters (Boat Pox) and give you better performance. Be sure that the bottom is clean of growth and stains and prep the surface with Boat Scrub for best results.

  • On new boats and boats that have not been affected with osmosis, VS721 has been proven to be 100% effective. It seals the pores in the gelcoat and is waterproof so it does not allow water to migrate through the gelcoat.

On boats that have already been affected by osmosis it has been proven to be effective at preventing the spread, but not always. The cause of Osmosis Blistering is complex. In most cases it’s caused by water migrating from the exterior but can also be caused by water migrating from the interior if the bilge is wet.

Resins used to manufacture fiberglass boats have changed over the years, partially due to environmental considerations, and new boats are more susceptible to this type of blistering. If water has penetrated into the fiberglass, behind the gelcoat, the blistering will probably continue, even though the surface has been sealed with VS721.

Current barrier coats are epoxy based and need to be over painted to protect the epoxy from UV damage. This is OK if you plan to paint the bottom of your boat with anti fouling paint but is not very acceptable if you want to keep your boat bottom clean and original or if you trailer or rack your boat. VS721 Bottom Coat is perfectly clear.

If you don’t have many blisters or are content to live with them it’s worth trying VS721. There is an excellent chance that it will stop the continuation. If it doesn’t work then you are faced with peeling the gelcoat, applying a barrier coat and re-gelling or painting the bottom, which is what you need to do to fix the problem.

  • Sorry, VS721 must be applied to clean gelcoat or a hard painted surface such as a two part polyurethane or epoxy barrier coat. Coverage is about 400 sq. ft. You need two coats. One bottle will protect most 24 to 25 ft boats, depending on the condition of the surface. If it is an older boat with a porus surface, more VS721 will be needed to seal the pores.

VS721 also eliminates the need for a barrier coat as it seals the bottom against water migration, protecting against osmosis blisters. If you race your boat, you will love VS721 bottom coat. It's proven to increase top speed, gives you better light air performance, allows your boat to point higher into the wind, tacks easier and faster, reduces weight and its Environment Safe. Many sailors have made the move, even though stripping off the old toxic paint is a bit of a pain. In future, it's a lot easier to apply than paint. No sanding, priming, masking, etc.

  • A lot of boaters use VS721 Bottom Coat above the waterline and it helps reduce the scum along the waterline and makes it much easier to keep clean. The only downside to this is that VS721 Bottom Coat does not contain UV inhibitors and you could get some sun damage in this area. Some boaters apply Premium Boat Shine slightly below the waterline and then after letting it cure for 3 to 4 days, apply the VS721 Bottom Coat over the Premium Boat Shine and above the waterline. This seems to help.

The scum that forms along the waterline, starts off as bacteria. The most primitive life form and the building block for all higher life forms. It is most prolific along the waterline because there you have the perfect conditions of a relatively stationary substrate, your hull, air, water and sunlight. Once you have bacterial slime, which will attach to anything, it will attract algae, which feeds on it and eventually higher life forms like barnacles, zebra mussels, etc.

The key to keeping your boat pristine is keeping the slime at bay. You can do this by periodically wiping the water line with a sponge, rag or brush. Regular use of the boat will also eliminate the attachment because of the abrasion of the water against the hull.

VS721 Bottom Coat will seal the pores in your gelcoat and reduce the surface tension on your hull which will make the slime easier to remove and make it more difficult for the slime to attach in the first place, but as I said, bacteria will attach to anything if the conditions are right.

  • Coverage is about 400 sq. ft per bottle, less if your boat is new, more if your boat is older. VS721 Bottom Coat will soak into the pores of the gelcoat to seal it and older boats absorb more material. You will probably need about 1 1/2 bottles for your boat.

For best results, be sure to wash the bottom with Boat Clean Plus and prep the surface with Boat Scrub before applying the VS721 Bottom Coat.

  • Boat Scrub will remove any residue, stain, and oxidation that can impair the cross linking of the VS721 Bottom Coat to the hull. This is important to get the maximum performance from the product. Even though the hull looks clean there may be pollutants or traces of oxidized material on the surface or in the pores. If you don't clean the bottom with Boat Scrub, just before you apply the VS721 Bottom Coat, it will not last as long or perform as well. Boat Scrub is recommended because it contains Hypexine to deep clean and it will remove all traces of oxidization. It is also free rinsing and will not leave a residue.

  • Application is pretty simple, like applying a liquid wax. Make sure that your bottom is clean and as smooth as possible, you may have to wet sand or compound it to get it back to its original appearance. Then prep the surface by deep cleaning it with Boat Scrub. I recommend using a Power Mitt to make this process easier. After apply a coat of VS721 Bottom Coat with a damp sponge, rubbing it into the pores of the gelcoat to seal it and protect against Osmosis. When it dries to a haze, wipe off the haze with a terry towel. After 24 housrs apply a second coat. Wait 48 hours and you're done. The process is much easier, faster and safer than re-painting. At the end of the year, clean the hull with a sponge and a bit of Boat Clean Plus and re-apply 2 coats the following spring (prep with Boat Scrub 1st) or you can put on one coat in the fall and the second in the spring.

Ideal temperature is between 50' and 80' but the hull temperature is more important than ambient temperature. If the hull feels comforatable to your hand it should be OK to apply the VS721 Bottom Coat. Humidity is not usually a factor unless it is so high that the hull is wet. As long as the hull is dry, the VS721 Bottom Coat will adhere to the surface.

  • You need to strip off the old wax before applying the VS721 Bottom Coat, in order to get good adhesion and longevity.

First scrub the bottom with a solution of 1 part Boat Clean Plus to 4 parts water. Use a Scrub Mitt or aggressive cloth. Next scrub the bottom with Boat Scrub, or you can wet the Scrub Mitt with Boat Clean Plus and then add some Boat Scrub to the mitt and scrub with both products at once. This will reduce labor. When you are through the bottom should be squeaky clean and stain free.

Next wipe on the VS721 Bottom Coat with a damp sponge, rubbing it into the gelcoat. Let it dry to a haze. Wipe off the haze with a terry towel. After 24 hours apply a second coat. This will protect your boat bottom all season. At the end of the season just wash the bottom of you boat with a solution of Boat Clean Plus, using a sponge or Scrub Mitt. There will enough left to protect your bottom over the winter storage period.

  • VS721 Bottom Coat works well on trailer stored and rack stored boats. It also works well in both fresh and salt water. VS721 Bottom Coat is a very durable polymer that is impervious to water and extremely resistant to abrasion, such as you can get from trailering. It will last all season, can withstand speeds up to 145 mph and can be used on fiberglass and aluminum power boats, pontoon boats and sailboats.

  • Usually only once a year, unless you are in a high growth area, in which case every 6 months. If you see slime beginning to form on your hull, just wipe it off with a sponge and you will be able to extend the life of the VS721 Bottom Coat.
